Although everyone is surprised to hear Zero’s intentions of joining Britania in creating the zone of Japan, people are not exactly sure as to his motives behind joining forces. When Zero contacts the Knight of Rounds in a private conference, he tells them that he wants to be exiled and therefore forgiven of all his sins, letting him escape away from zone 11. When the time comes for Nunnally to announce the opening of Japan, the Black Knights finally reveal Zero’s plan. All of the million Japanese that came were wearing Zero masks and suits, and since Zero’s identity is unknown, they all planned on going into exile together, therefore escaping Britania. Although the Knight of Rounds were on the verge of shooting them down, Suzaku stops them, maybe in order to honor Euphemia’s memory and their hopes at peace.

Episode 03 “The Academy of Imprisonment” at a glance:

Lelouch feigns innocence with proof that he was at the school the entire time Zero’s broadcast was being aired. The show turns even more like Death Note as Lelouch is constantly under surveillance, waiting for him to make a fatal error. Overview of episode 02 - “Japan Independence Plan”:

Through Karen and Lelouch’s memories, the outcome of the showdown at the end of season 1 is finally revealed. Karen had fled from the scene, feeling betrayed by Lelouch. Neither of the bullets from Lelouch or Suzaku’s guns had hit their mark, and Suzaku took Lelouch down by force, taking him alive to see the Emperor. There, Lelouch was restrained from using his Geass and Suzaku asked for a promotion to “Knight of the Rounds” (an elite group directly under the emperor), selling out his friend.

The Emperor decides to keep Lelouch alive and does something quite unanticipated to restrain Lelouch. The Emperor uses Geass on him! His geass, it seems, has the power to manipulate someones memories. He makes Lelouch forget all about his identity, his sister Nunally and creates false memories (such as his brother) to put Lelouch back into a normal life.

Things are heating up at Babel tower, as Zero easily outmaneuvers the Britanian army. Although Karen has her own questions about Lelouch’s lies to her, all of his followers carry out his orders without fail. Things are going smoothly until a new prototype knightmare based on the old Lancelot that Suzaku piloted appears and quickly plows through many of the Black Knights.
