Shinkurou and Murasaki, a final farewell?
Episode 12 “I Exist” at a glance:
Shinkurou, Yayoi and Benika are all heading back to the inner sanctuary for round two, Shinkurou by foot and the others by car. After a long talk with Murasaki’s father in the inner sanctuary, Shinkurou gets ready for a final showdown with Ryūji. Also, after a short car chase, Yayoi gets ready for her own showdown with Lin. Ryūji and Lin think that they have Shinkurou and Yayoi figured out by the techniques that Benika taught them, but both of them have the martial arts taught to Shinkurou by the Houzuki’s under their belts. In a move of desperation, Ryūji stabs Benika with the dagger still lying around, causing Shinkurou to whip out his Houzuki Horn and seriously kick some ass. After he explains to Murasaki that it was a weapon for killing that he had placed in his body while training, she tells him that he is far less mature and strong than she had thought and that, just maybe, she could “catch up to him”.
Instead of leaving with Shinkurou, Murasaki decides to stay and live as a woman of the Kuhouins… but not one with the life of the Inner Sanctuary. She tells her father that she is going to fight the customs of the Kuhouin famiy, but still proudly carry the Kuhouin name and live with them. In a bittersweet farewell, Shinkurou and Murasaki exchange brief goodbyes yet lasting impressions on one another. The ending leaves many things unsaid, such as their eventual reuniting (which makes it all the more bittersweet) and Murasaki leaves us with a final question “Shinkurou, do you love me?”. While Shinkurou is riding home with Benika and Yayoi, he lets his friends know what happened and dozed off to dream of himself, walking with his beloved Murasaki.

They just had to stick all of the main characters in the show at some point.

Review: And thus ends the tale of Shinkurou and his loli-princess Murasaki. Or at least from our point of view.
You have to admit, Shinkurou with the horn was pretty bad ass, he totally could have destroyed everyone in that room by himself. Sadly, the greatest question, of whether or not Shinkurou and Murasaki would one say end up together, was not answered, but I guess it was better to leave it that way, with their love still a fantasy of Murasaki’s, not yet fully developed. Its a classic “soul-society” type rescue where one organization (family) is extremely corrupt and wrongfully forcing their customs on unwilling people. Although some people may be against Shinkurou and Murasaki’s love, I can definitely see your point, but if they wait until they’re both adults, I don’t really see any problem with it. Strangely enough (fun fact about me), my parents have a bigger age gap between them than Murasaki and Shinkurou (haha I’m sure you all needed to know).
In general, Kurenai was a pretty solid show. It definitely wasn’t the best show of Spring 2008, nor was it the flashiest or had the most action, but it had its moments. If it hadn’t been for how quick-paced the last two episodes were, I honestly would probably put Kurenai lower on my “best animes of spring 2008″ list, but I felt that on top of being action-packed and interesting episoded, they wrapped things up very nicely and I don’t feel like many important loose ends were left unexplained. Of course, Kure-nai had it’s boring episodes on top of the more interesting ones, but I guess thats the way anime turns out sometimes.
All in all, Kurenai was a very solid show. It wasn’t the best show of the season, but it left me with that bittersweet feeling in my heart and a wandering imagination as the the futures of Shinkurou and Murasaki. Let’s say a final farewell to Kurenai and Murasaki/Shinkurou, the loli/lolicon of the season and a touching story of growth for both of them.

ending is a bit strange, i admit. i read so many blogs and they have different opinions on the ending. But am i the only one who realize that the little girl is back where she escaped from? wtf. hello, she still need to be rescued. And come on, even if the father promised blah blah blah, nothing will change. how dumb can the guy be to believe that? so she is 7 now, 6 year later, she will be an adult… who gave birth to her brother’s baby. lol. good idea on leaving the little girl in the lion den, sure smart of him to believe their lies. we can kiss that little girl future goodbye now.
6 years later she will be an adult O_O? is this by jewish standars?
yeah i thought it was way too trusting for shinkurou to believe the kuhouins… haha no youre not the only one to realize shes back to where she escaped from… but thats the whole point. the story is mostly a story about growth… the growth of both shinkurou, who learns to be strong without using his horn, and being a strong person… and murasaki who has to grow up learning about the real world, manners and other things so that she could be a strong person in her family.
i admit that i dont like the fact that shes back with the kuhouins, but i do believe that shes going to have a better future with them, especially after seeing her dad’s new feelings towards the kuhouin traditions. unlike the son, he’s willing for change. also, in my mind i imagine that shinkurou comes back to see her from time to time and they end up together.
thats just my interpretation… its murasaki’s choice in the end for her to make, and thats what makes shinkurou right over the kuhouins, not the fact that hes taking her away but that he respects her choice.
A 7 year old shouldn’t have the right to decide her future since she don’t know better. If this was the real world, the cops would be all over that kuhouins place. Someone need to put some sense into that 7yr girl and tell her that what she want isn’t the best thing for her and she need to listen to adults who cares for her and not stay with adults who want to rape her. She might not understand why now, but when she is older and smarter, she will see what most people already saw, that the kuhouins is a bunch of sickos. Drag her ass away, a 7yr is too dumb to understand the dangers she is in. Better save her now and regret later, than leave her there to die.
if this were america* the cops would have been all over that place, true. but there was no proof that they were going to rape her… and the father actually did love the daughter. it’s just the corrupt traditions that were broken…
and as the father said, he expected shinkurou to come back. murasaki is a very unique case because of how mature she is. pretty much throughout the entire show she sounds 10x more mature than shinkurou does.
i see exactly what at you are saying, and a part of me whole-heartedly agrees with you… but i feel that its a lot more complicated than a 7 year old girl whos going to get raped by her family and gets left there.
urgh… I wanted Murasaki to beat her brother up….
love the screencaps, btw.
haha yeah her brother was a douche. thanks tho
I loved the series but… GAH!Was THAT supposed to be the ending??!!
I mean… Personally, I don’t like the idea of Murasaki and Shinkurou being together as a couple but HEY! That is not the only way they can be together. And seriously, couldn’t have the history ended with them taking her away from that awful place??

Спасибо вам огромное. Это именно то, что всем нужно было
The reason the ending sucks is because the story actually continues. Unfortunately, the anime doesn’t. Where’s the justice in that!
