I thought the kotomi arc was good - the fuko arc, tho....geez, that type of thing can only pull on my heartstrings once. The ryo/kyo arc was like....?....i didn't even know who liked who. it seemed put on the side, but also brought up randomly to give some bulk and spice to the nagisa general-arc... i did like clannad better than kanon - though i never finished kanon...nor FMP...nor Shuffle...nor black lagoon... i see what you mean.

I felt that he kinda had to choose Kaede, towards the beginning, because she's pretty much only living for him. The whole scene when she freaks out at Asa was easy to see coming.
