Episode 07 “Black Blood of Terror〜The Weapon Within Chrona?〜” at a glance:
Maka and Soul travel to Italy to hunt down another serial killer as part of an extracurricular assignment. When they’re there however, they sense Chrona and his demon-sword partner Ragnarok killing some innocent human souls. When they go to confront Chrona, there are obviously some very serious problems with him, including his sword being inside of him (his blood), his strange actions, and he also seems to be possessed by the strange figure perched above the town.
The vibrations of the demon-sword resonate with it’s soul, causing very serious damage to Soul Eater. In order to protect Soul, Maka stops defending herself and just tries to outrun Chrona. When Chrona corners Maka and it seems that she is about to be hit by Ragnarok, Soul steps out of form and takes the blow, sending tons of blood gushing from him.

Soul Eater’s Cooru + 10
Review: Soul definately won some “cool” points by taking a bullet for Maka there. Also for the first part of episode, I completely thought that Chrona was a girl… needless to say, he’s just some weedy shy guy.
Still, I guess a lot needs to be explained concerning the puppeteer lurking above the city. Things are looking pretty bleak for Soul and Maka. Gotta’ love the fighting scenes though, and I love their diversity to be able to work with different styles of buildings (gothic structures in Italy).

Your initial thought was right, Chrona IS a girl.

The fact you linked to Flight of the Conchords in response to Chrona’s gender wins you awesome points.
Chrona’s a boy, as far as I’m concerned. Petticoat punishment and all that (boys being forced to dress as girls), Medusa’s twisted enough to do something like that too.
I personally believe Chrona to be a boy as well.
REASONS:
1) He has a boy’s voice. If it were a girl, it would have a freaking girl’s voice and all confusion would be lost.
2) He says boku (I for boys) instead of wakashi (I for girls) and he doesn’t seem brazen enough to use a boy’s version of I if he were female.
3) No chest! Okay, so Maka doesn’t have one either. So what?
4) He says, “I don’t know how to deal with girls” and blushes every time he’s near Maka.
5) To take down this next argument for it becomes an issue: Boys can be meek, shy and timid too. Don’t go around using gender bias as it just makes you look stupid and sexist.

Chrona’s seiyuu is a girl…though anime frequently has women doing guys’ voices I don’t think this is one of them. (not so much the other way around, though the crazy ass butler from Kuroshitsuji sounds like a guy…)
I think the thing that tips me off the most is the dress. Not many characters are in perma trap mode (except in Happiness! and Otome….) and Medusa doesn’t seem sick enough to make her little boy into a little girl. That and I never see trap on the chrona pics in Danbooru ><”
Chrona is a HE. Soul refers to HIM as a HE in the first episode he appears.
I’m pretty sure he knows it. If I saw a boy in a dress, I’d automatically assume he was a girl. Soul must have gender detecting powers.
